Hello, Lyndol,
Would you happen to have a transcription of the music for your performance of “The Nearness of You” (time index 0:00 to 3:00)?
If you don’t have a transcription, can you tell me in what key you played the song?
Thanks,
Peter

Hi Peter,
Myself filling in for Lyndol here. A transcription of Lyndol’s accompaniment was not created but I can certainly create something if it would be useful.
To answer your second question:
Lyndol sings and plays the song in the key of Bb Major. The easiest way to work this out is to do the following analysis:
1) Analyse the first chord of the tune.
Usually – not always! – but usually, the first chord of the tune will also be the key of the tune. It is also quite common for jazz standards to start on the ii-7 chord of the key, but the most common starting chord is the key of the tune. So that’s the first place to look when working out the key of a tune.
Next….
2) Analyse the final chord of the tune.
Virtually all jazz standards end on the tonic, ie. the home base, or key of the tune. If we look at the chord Lyndol ends on at 2:52, again we see that it is a Bb major chord.
Based on this analysis we can quickly establish that Lyndol is playing and singing in the key of Bb.
Try this process to quickly figure out the key of any recording or performance.
I hope that helps!
Cheers,
Hayden
