Seminar Description
In this live seminar we take a deep dive into the tune “Misty” to discuss intros, alternate chord changes, fills, embellishments, and endings.
edwin1 says
Please divide seminar into lesson chapters for easier access to different parts of the seminar. Thanks
Hayden says
Hi Edwin, I have just added the seminar chapters. The lead sheet I annotated is also included in the downloads section if you scroll down the page. Cheers, Hayden

I really love the camera angle! And we can see the sheets clearly too! Thank You so much Hayden! for this wonderful live seminar! It was past midnight for me so I had to re-watch it here instead.
Hayden says
Thanks Tina, I’m glad you like the new camera angles. I had an idea to improve the lead sheet… I will print each 8 bar section on a single sheet of paper so that they are bigger which will give us lots of space to write the reharmonisations.
I will do this for my upcoming seminar on “Georgia On My Mind”.
My next seminar is scheduled for the same time, but for my first seminar in March I will do a morning session so that it is at a reasonable hour for you and our other students on that side of the world.
Cheers,
Hayden

Great seminar – can you send/upload the annotated lead sheet please
Thanks
Hayden says
Hi Anthony,
The annotated lead sheet has been added to the download section which you can find in the bottom right hand side of the page, underneath the chapters.
Enjoy these reharmonisations!
Cheers,
Hayden

LOVE LOVE LOVE these sessions!!! Sorry I have missed the actual live sessions, but I continue to learn so much from watching the recordings.
If you get a chance, you might want to insert the ten second roll back button.
Thanks for all you do!
Hayden says
My pleasure Celia, glad you enjoyed the session and it was a fun one to teach :–)
We are following the same format a week today using the tune “Georgia On My Mind” which is a really nice tune to reharmonise.
Rodger that with the 10 second roll back button, I will inform the developers now.
Cheers,
Hayden
Hayden says
Hi Celia, the 10-second skip back button is now showing. Cheers.

Hello Hayden: to benefit from this lesson I re-visited all the previous ones on Misty and that was a good idea since it made it possible for me to ‘get’ the rich assortment of chords presented in this lesson (and I did not get all of them, as yet but plan to).
I especially liked the ‘flat five’ or ‘sharp four’ descending line of chords (so applicable to other tunes, of course) and the E maj 7 #11 ending. So elegant.
Thank you. Best, Smole
Hayden says
Thanks Smole – I’m glad you enjoyed the seminar.
And yes the #11 ending is a lovely ending chord for any ballad.

It is a lovely arrangement. If it is at all possible to have a transcription, I would be able to more easily follow the kind of melodic details you are describing. (I had some issues with the recording at times and alsoI tried to slow it down but the distortions made it unpleasant. But, even if all were perfect with technology, I would be able to learn the ideas you discuss in the lesson better if I could look at the “sheet music transcription” while listening to you. (This is probably a classical training issue, but it has helped me quite a bit to grow in jazz!) Also, I understand the concept of using SUS-Tritone substitute chord progression in turnarounds, but working with the melody notes choices (to move from one chord to the other) would be where I need some help. Is there a lesson about this, or is this more an experiential, trial and error process? Thanks so much!
Hayden says
Hi Amy,
Yes I will create a transcription of the arrangement covered in this seminar.
Here are 2 lessons on tritone substitution that you will find useful, in the second one we cover this exact tune:
https://www.pianogroove.com/jazz-piano-lessons/tritone-substitution-tutorial/
https://www.pianogroove.com/jazz-piano-lessons/advanced-tritone-substitution/
Hope that helps.
Cheers,
Hayden

Hi Hayden,
Great lesson. Loving pianogroove you are really helping me unlock some mysteries! Do you cover tritone substitution elsewhere?
Thanks
Ian
Hayden says
Hi Ian,
Thanks for the kind words – i’m glad to hear you are making progress with PianoGroove!
Yes we do indeed have lessons on Tritone Substitution, check out these 3 lessons:
https://www.pianogroove.com/jazz-piano-lessons/tritone-substitution-tutorial/
https://www.pianogroove.com/jazz-piano-lessons/tritone-substitution-exercise-drill/
https://www.pianogroove.com/jazz-piano-lessons/advanced-tritone-substitution/
The 3rd link above is particularly relevant to this tune and the arrangement.
We also have many other jazz standard studies on tritone substitution in our Chord Substitution course, see that here:
https://www.pianogroove.com/jazz-piano-lessons/chord-substitution-reharmonisation/
Let me know if I can be of further assistance.
Cheers,
Hayden

Thanks alot for an outstanding lives session on Misty. I think both we, beginners with small hands, and advanced player alike can learn much from this session.
Great work Hayden!!
I wonder do you have the second A section available in transcription. If not I can of course write it down on note sheet. Is it possible to have some more comments on the arpeggios used in this melody?
Kind regard
Emil
Hayden says
Hi Emil,
I’m glad you enjoyed seminar. Yes creating a transcription of the arrangement is on my to-do-list. I will send you an email once it’s complete.
For the arpeggios I am usually just running the chord tones up the keyboard. For example over Ebmaj7 I play D-G-Bb-D which is also an inverted G triad. I also use upper structure triad runs over the V7 chords. Check out the seminar chapter “Right hand runs on the V7 chord” which starts at 25:33s.
I hope that helps Emil and I will get the transcription finished asap.
Cheers,
Hayden

Hi Hayden
Is tonight’s seminar recording live yet on the website.
Hayden says
Hi Karl,
Yes it is on the website, there was an issue with my internet whilst recording the seminar today, and the recording stalls and lags in places due to this.
You can find it here: https://www.pianogroove.com/live-seminars/over-the-rainbow-jazz-standard/
and I will re-record the whole thing tomorrow in better quality without the lag.
If you check back there tomorrow night, there will be a much better quality version.
Cheers,
Hayden

One of my favorite standards. So easy to play but sounds so good. Thanks for taking the time to share some different approaches to playing it.
Hayden says
My pleasure Adam – yes it’s a great tune and one that I love to use for examples and demonstrations.
I’m glad to hear you enjoyed the lesson!
Cheers,
Hayden
