Jazz Piano Arrangements for Christmas Songs
Welcome to this special lesson on jazz piano arrangements for Christmas songs. In this session, we explore the harmonic richness and creative voicings that can be applied to holiday classics, enhancing your ability to play and improvise with depth and sophistication.
Exploring "I’ll Be Home for Christmas"
"I’ll Be Home for Christmas" is a beautiful holiday ballad with a primarily diatonic structure that follows common jazz progressions such as 1-6-2-5. The song allows for harmonic substitutions, including tritone subs, to create more colorful and unexpected chord movements.
We begin by voicing C6 instead of Cmaj7 to avoid clashes between the melody and bass. A common substitution in this tune is replacing G7 with Eb7, which functions as a tritone substitution for A7, leading smoothly to D7.
Using inside voices and chromatic movements adds a lush, sophisticated texture to the arrangement. The progression of C-7 to F7 to Bbmaj7 provides a strong foundation for melodic improvisation, allowing for fluid voice leading and creative reinterpretations.
"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" – Alternate Chord Voicings
Transitioning from "I’ll Be Home for Christmas" to "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" can be done seamlessly by using a 2-5-1 in C major or an extended turnaround. This tune features extended harmony and opportunities for lush reharmonization.
A notable section of the song introduces G7sus4 resolving to G7, where adding tensions such as flat 9 and sharp 11 enhances the harmonic depth. The descending bass motion (C to B to Bb) enriches the arrangement by adding movement and guiding the listener through the changes.
"The Christmas Song" – A Study in Harmonic Transposition
"The Christmas Song" (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire) stands out due to its modulation by major thirds, reminiscent of John Coltrane’s "Giant Steps" harmonic structure. The song moves from Eb major to G major, creating a smooth but striking harmonic shift.
The voicings emphasize chord extensions such as the 6th on Ebmaj7 and altered dominants like G7#9, resolving into the next key center. A particularly effective reharmonization is using an Ab-6 chord instead of Db7, adding warmth and a sense of mystery before resolving to Gmaj7.
Improvisation Techniques for Christmas Songs
Improvisation over Christmas songs requires maintaining the lyrical quality of the melody while exploring harmonic possibilities. Key strategies include:
- Using the diminished scale over dominant chords to create tension and resolution.
- Targeting chord tones and guide tones to maintain strong voice leading.
- Incorporating chromatic passing tones for smooth melodic movement.
- Applying motif development, taking a short melodic phrase and varying it rhythmically and harmonically.
- Exploring tritone substitutions, such as replacing A7 with Eb7, to create smoother resolutions.
Practice Tips:
- Play the Melody with Simple Voicings First – Before adding reharmonizations, ensure you can play the melody clearly with basic 7th chords. This helps maintain the song’s integrity while developing your harmonic ear.
- Experiment with Tritone Substitutions – For example, in a 2-5-1 progression like D-7 to G7 to Cmaj7, try replacing G7 with Db7 to add unexpected harmonic movement.
- Use Open Voicings for Richer Sounds – Instead of playing root-position chords, spread the chord tones across both hands, incorporating 9ths, 11ths, and 13ths where possible.
- Practice Descending and Ascending Inner Voice Movements – Keep your chord voicings interesting by moving inner voices chromatically, especially when transitioning between dominant chords.
- Stay Present in Your Playing – Avoid falling into "autopilot mode." Engage with the harmonic movement, phrasing, and dynamics to bring life to your performance.
By incorporating these techniques, you can transform simple holiday melodies into rich, expressive jazz piano arrangements. Happy practicing! 🎶
Was there a light up keyboard in this seminar as jovino mentioned it was going to be added and I can’t see it ?
Hi Karl,
Apologies for the late reply. I’ve been on vacation this week.
Yes I have the midi file for this session and I will add the light-up keyboard shortly. I’m unsure why this wasn’t done after the seminar… it must have slipped through the net but no problem, we have the files.
I will send the original video file to our video guy now. He straightens up the keyboard on Jovino’s original recording so that it perfectly aligns with the light up keyboard.
I should have this finished in a day or 2.
Talk soon, cheers,
Hayden
Hi Karl,
The light-up keyboard is now added.
Thanks for your patience whilst I created the file and let me know if I can help with anything else.
Cheers,
Hayden
