Again thank you Hayden! If you could also add the 10 second forward/back options, that would be great!
Hayden says
Hi Celia,
I have added the 10-second forward/rewind buttons and also the chapters.
Cheers,
Hayden

Very fine lesson!
Your offering us a bit of homework prior to the seminar was a great idea. It gave me a chance to study and follow more clearly the information as you presented it. And it made me go back and review fundamental points of theory. Maybe you could include a similar focus in future seminars. Thanks!
Hayden says
Thanks Scott.
Rodger that with the homework prior to the session, I agree it’s a nice way for students to prepare and to get the most out of the session.
I have just added November’s seminars. I will be hosting a similar seminar on Beegie Adair’s “My Foolish Heart” and I will post the chord chart and preliminary homework in the forum shortly.
Cheers,
Hayden

Thank you Hayden, for introducing me to Beegie Adair, what a beautiful pianist.
Hayden says
My pleasure Mark.
I agree she is a wonderfully talented player.
In case you missed it, here is another seminar where we analyse Beegie’s playing on the tune “Body & Soul” – https://www.pianogroove.com/live-seminars/body-soul-jazz-standard/
There are lots of useful insights in that video.

Thank you so much for the seminar, @Hayden. Unfortunately I was traveling and couldn’t attend live but I’m working my way through it, and although it’s difficult stuff it all makes eminent sense. I’m about half-way through and this is my second session so you can see how slowly it is sinking in. Beegie’s style is, however, the one I’d most like to emulate, so I’m being persistent and hoping that what I learn here can be incorporated into other tunes. Already I’m starting to look for opportunities to put more susVs into my playing to richen the harmonies, trying to analyse pieces the way that you do.
As difficult as it is to follow her playing it must have been so much more difficult to transcribe it !!!!
Aye,
George
Hayden says
Thanks for your feedback George and no problem that you couldn’t make the live session. It’s exactly why we record them.
You will most certainly find that the pieces of harmonic or melodic vocabulary can be applied to other songs.
On the 19th of November we will breakdown Beegie Adair’s “My Foolish Heart” and I will make a point to also reapply some of the material from this session.
I’ll be sending out November’s seminar listings tomorrow.

Hayden

Hi Hayden,
Just joined your site 2 days ago. I live in Ashland, Oregon. I was delighted to see this seminar on Beegie Adair. I enjoy her playing also and would like to incorporate some of her techniques into my playing. I often wondered if she had produced any instructional materials. But thanks so much for doing this. This has inspired me to listen more.
Becky
Hayden says
Hi Becky,
I’m glad you enjoyed the seminar.
To the best of my knowledge Beegie doesn’t have any online educational resources that she has produced. Of course she has an extensive discography which is a wonderful source of inspiration.
We do have 2 other seminars which cover here style, check them out here:
https://www.pianogroove.com/live-seminars/my-foolish-heart-beegie-adair/
https://www.pianogroove.com/live-seminars/body-soul-jazz-standard/
We will also be studying more of her recordings in upcoming seminars.
Enjoy the above seminars and if you have any favourite recordings by Beegie that you would like me to cover, just let me know.
Cheers,
Hayden

Hi Hayden. Can a dominant 7th flat 9 chord also be thought of as a diminished chord?
Hayden says
Hi Lonnie,
Yes that’s right, if we remove the root from any dominant b9 chord, we are left with a diminished chord.
Also every diminished chord can function as 4 different rootless dominant b9 chords, for example Edim7 can function as a rootless C7b9, Gb7b9, A7b9, and Eb7b9 and the roots of these chords create another diminished chord which when combined with the first one, create the whole diminished scale.
Here’s an interesting lesson on diminished chords by Jovino: https://www.pianogroove.com/bossa-nova-lessons/useful-diminished-trick-for-any-251/
Let me know if I can help further here.
Cheers,
Hayden
