Red Garland Solo Analysis
For the next lessons in this course we will analyse a number of improvised solos over the tune “There Will Never Be Another You”.
When I’m learning to play a new jazz standard. The first thing I do is listen to as many different recordings of the tune that I can find. I then create a shortlist of tunes that I like the sound of and I will transcribe from them to pick up pieces of jazz vocabularly and other more subtle nuances of the performance.
Red Garland Trio – "There Will Never Be Another You"
In this lesson we are going analyse the first 16 bars of Red Garland’s solo over the tune “There Will Never Be Another You”. We will break down what he’s doing and then we will emulate his style.
This tune is often played very fast and this recording of the Red Garland Trio is one of those fast versions. Remember that you can use tools such as Transcribe to slow down the performance to help you with transcription. Check out the course on “How To Transcribe By Ear” for more information on the abilities of Transcription software.
Practice Tips
-
The first step I always take when transcribing a solo, is to play along with the record just using left hand voicings.
-
This will give me a good idea of where the melody notes are falling in relation to the underlying harmony.
-
It will also give me an idea of where the improvised lines start and end.
- The next step is to transcribe the notes of the solo, and again play along with the record. This is one of the best ways to improve your jazz feel.
