Lines Over the 1 Chord
In this short masterclass we look at three lines that you can use over the 1, or tonic chord. These lines are very handy, not only when playing over a tonic, but also in a 251 situation.
To keep things simple we are going to stay in the key of Bb major and we will use There Will Never Be Another You as an example tune.

Practice Tips
-
It's great to start out by learning these lines in Bb but you need to know them in other keys as well. Using the circle of 5ths to change keys can be a great way to practice.
-
Choose some different tunes and identify the places where these lines work, i.e. sections of the tune that sit on the 1 chord or 251 progressions. Practice playing the tunes using these lines wherever they fit.
- You can take a more personal approach by writing your own lines. Either start from scratch or take some ideas from a bebop player that you like, i.e. Bud Powell or Charlie Parker.
