Course Info
In this course we explore the theory and application of functional harmony. We start by clearly defining scales and keys so that the we understand difference between these two terms.
Diatonic Harmony Exploration
Each module in the course focuses on a single key. Starting with the key of C Major we identify the 7 diatonic 7th chords and we explore a selection of voicing options and formulas that can be used for each chord.
We then apply this information in context of common progressions such as 251s, 1625s and the 36251 progression. We start with simple examples and then add chord extensions, alterations, passing chords, upper structure triads, and substitutional harmony.
Application To Jazz Standards
Each module contains jazz standard studies where we first analyse the functional harmony to understand the role and purpose of each chord in the form. This gives us a deeper understanding of the harmony and cadences so that we can be more creative and spontaneous in our arrangement and interpretations.
