Footprints: Modal Comping & Improvisation
In this tutorial we explore modal comping possibilities and modal improvisation techniques over the iconic jazz standard ‘Footprints’.
We start by harmonising the head melody with perfect 4ths and common 4th based voicings such as the So What Voicing. As we move into the comping solos we continue with a 4th-based voicing theme and also incorporate Drop 2 and Barry Harris voicing configurations.
Modal Techniques & Principles
We apply a wide range of modal comping techniques and principles such as moving voicings outside of the harmony and constructing 4th based voicings that follow the notes of the dorian mode.
We continue with a modal themed improvisation including modal triad pairs, playing outside of the harmony, and introducing rhythmic interest to spice up our improvised melody lines.
