Bebop Lines
In this 5 minute masterclass we will look at three bebop lines over a basic 251 progression. To keep things simple we are going to stay in the key of Bb, using the 251 progression Cm7 – F7 – Bbmaj7.
As an example we will use the song There Will Never Be Another You.
Additionally I will show you how to combine parts of these examples together to create variations.

Practice Tips
-
It's great to start out by learning these lines in Bb but you need to know them in other keys as well. Using the circle of 5ths to change keys can be a great way to practice.
-
Choose some different tunes and identify the places where these lines work, i.e. 251 progressions where the 2 and 5 chords are one bar each. Practice playing the tunes using these lines wherever they fit.
- You can take a more personal approach by writing your own lines. Either start from scratch or take some ideas from a bebop player that you like, i.e. Bud Powell or Charlie Parker.
