Samba Pattern For Beginners
This lesson simplifies the complexity of the samba groove by breaking it down into 3 manageable parts – easy to follow for beginners.
Samba – A 3 Layered Groove
Think of samba as a 3-layered groove. We have the quarter notes, 8th notes, and 16th notes. Starting with the quarter note pulse, we add each layer incrementally.
The first ‘hit’ is non-syncopated, then we add the syncopated patterns that define the samba groove. Each pattern is introduced step-by-step, ensuring clarity and ease of understanding.
Practice Tips
-
Learn to play the fully syncopated pattern and relax. It might take a while so be patient and diligent.
-
Play the fully syncopated pattern using random chords, perhaps starting with 1 or 2 chords for simplicity.
-
The chord changes are generally anticipated when playing Samba as Jovino demonstrates on the 2 chord groove in chapter 2.
-
Focus on creating a balanced groove between the left and right hand. Avoid an overpowering left hand bass line.
