“Consolação” Tutorial
In this lesson we will look at a composition by the great guitarist Baden Powell called “Consolação” with lyrics by Vinicius de Moraes.
The Afro Sambas
In the early 1960’s Baden Powell and Vinicius de Moraes got together and wrote a series of compositions that they later called the “Afro Sambas”. They were very different to the Bossa Nova which was popular at the time and the compositions drew more on the African roots of samba. These compositions are generally very harmonically open but still have a lot of harmonic richness.
Form and Harmony
Similar to “A Rã”, the first half of this tune is a vamp between two chords, in this case, Fm7 and Cm7, and then the second half of the tune moves into a more complex chord progression. The melody is also simple but effective and is based on the F minor pentatonic scale.
