Bananeira Tutorial
In this lesson we will look at another João Donato composition with lyrics by Gilberto Gil called “Bananeira”. Bananeira translates to banana tree and the lyrics are nonsensical and absurd but were written more for rhythmic and onomatopoeic impact.
Maracatu
The underlying rhythm of this tune will probably be unfamiliar with many – rather than being based on samba this tune uses a maracatu rhythm as its foundation. This groove has a strong downbeat but then is heavily syncopated for the rest of the rhythmic cycle. The bridge goes to a samba for eight bars and then returns to the maracatu.

Practice Tips
-
The Maracatu rhythm can be challenging due to its heavy syncopation. There are many recordings online and it will help to listen and become familiar with the sound of this rhythm as you learn it.
-
If playing the melody and the accompaniment simultaneously is difficult, try tapping out the left hand rhythm as you play the melody. This takes away the added challenge of hitting the right notes in the left hand.
-
The same applies to improvising with this tune - try tapping out the left hand rhythm while you improvise, starting with simple lines and slowly moving to more complex.
