Thanks for your instruction on simple Samba groove. I understand the first two beats
1. Play two eighth notes on down beat of beat
2. Play down beat of beat 2 immediately followed by two eighth notes on back beat of beat 2
On beat 3 do I repeat same pattern as beat 1? Not sure of LH RH sequence for beat 4. Is it down beat in RH then left hand note followed by RH note. Seems like there should be an eighth note rest somewhere in this third

Hello James,
Thanks for your question. To develop the feeling for that kind of groove, you have to think in terms of 16th notes, not 8ths only. I have uploaded here a PDF where you can see and hear the development of different Brazilian piano styles. That specific groove you refer to is on page 7 in two variations.

Ah, I found the PDF. i didn’t scroll down far enough to see it on the next page. Thanks so much. I will study the PDF and come back to you with any questions. I am an organ player (Hammond B3),. Are there any adjustments i should make for the organ or just play it as if I am playing a piano?

Thanks for responding. I am not sure you are aware of the amazing Brazilian organists who have developed the samba style on B3. Here are some names for you to research:

In their playing you will see how the percussive element in the B3 can be used with great results in playing samba and other grooves.

Jovino, you made my day. By just practicing the basic groove with you at 6:30 I instantly wanted to learn more about Brazilian music. I like the ghost notes you play between the syncopated pattern on the right hand. It is subtle but adds to the overall groove.

I’m hardly waiting to join the workshop. It is my first time witnessing how to play authentic samba patterns on the piano; it is fascinating. I’ll need a few weeks to get comfortable playing with ghost notes but I think it is worth it.
