Gospel Walk-downs
In this lesson we introduce a gospel walk-down sequence that can be applied in bar 8 of the 12-bar blues in C. This walk-down serves as an alternative to the 1-3-6-2 progression that we covered in the previous lesson.
Consistent Melody Note
We keep the melody note consistent throughout the walk-down, as we have explored previously with the walk-up in bar 4. The consistent top note helps maintain a sense of unity and flow throughout the walk-down and makes the transition between chords smooth and cohesive.
Building Upon The 1-3-6-2 Progression
The walk-down phrase starts with familiar chords that we covered in the previous lesson. In bar 7 we move from C to E7, and the walk-down starts on the A- chord in bar 8.
From A-, our bass note drops to G and the right hand plays a C triad which gives us a C/G chord. The bass note then drops again to F and the right hand plays an F triad. We then have a diminished passing chords F#o7 which is closely followed by either D7 or Ab7 to create a dominant resolution into G7 in bar 9 of the blues form.
Practice Tips
-
Smooth Transitions: Keep the melody note consistent throughout the walk-down chords by inverting the underlying chord structures.
-
Rhythmic Feel: Vocalise the 12/8 pulse whilst playing the walk-down to internalise the underlying rhythmic framework and help you place the chords evenly.
-
Subtle Movements: Accentuate the subtle leading tone from C/E to F7 and experiment with 'toggling' the notes of the chords to enhance the flow of your playing.
-
Combine Techniques: Combine the gospel walk down with other techniques such as chromatic passing chords to create a richer 12 bar blues performance.
