The weird musical discovery I’m having learning New Orleans piano is that despite listening to Big Chief for 25 years, knowing the LH and RH in my head, being able to tap along with the notes in either… understanding where the notes are in relation to the beat is completely different. And if I tap my foot to the beat then all of a sudden playing the notes with correct time feels totally unnatural.

I think I always thought you could do this just by feel but you need to know how to play it “correctly” first, then you can play around with the feel afterwards.

This video was great though, I can play both hands through the Eb measures now if I concentrate. The light up keyboard will help get some of Jon’s nuance into the left hand.
