Booker’s 3 Hand Approach
This lesson is for the more advanced players out there. We will explore one of James Booker’s most challenging arrangements “Come On In My House”.
“Come On In My House” Breakdown
“Come On In My House” is a good example of James Booker’s so called “3-Hand Approach” as his playing sounds like it is being performed by 3 hands; two parts left hand and one part right hand.
In this lesson we will break down this unique style to understand the core components of Booker’s 3 Hand Approach and the subtleties and nuances of his left hand accompaniment.
Practice Tips
-
Notice that Booker changes his left hand chords on the upbeat to help propel the music forwards.
-
Practice the repeating motif slowly and accurately, then slowly increase the tempo.
-
Experiment with patterns and licks using Booker's tweaked pentatonic scale. Repeating melodic figures are characteristic of Booker's improvisational style.
