Walking Bass Lines Notes – Scale Tones
In part 2 of this lesson we continue our study of walking bass lines. In part 1 we created waling bass lines over major and minor 251s using the tones of the triad in combination with chromatic or stepwise approach patterns.
We’re now going to take the study a step further by adding scales into the walking bass lines. We’ll then talk about how to add additional passing tones to enhance the rhythm and feel of the bass line.
Remember that any of the patterns I have shown you can and should be mixed together. You can combine triad lines with scale lines to create many different variations. The key is to keep your bass lines interesting and unpredictable by alternating chord tones shape with step-wise motion and chromatic approach patterns.

Practice Tips

First play through the patterns in at least 3 or 4 keys so you are familar with the approach patterns.

Next work out bass lines for your favourite jazz standards, we'll start with Autumn Leaves which is the follow up to this lesson.

When playing walking bass through a jazz standard, always play with the metronome on 2&4 - this will help develop your sense of time and a strong swing feel.

Play your right hand voicings as quietly as possible so that you can focus on your left hand line.

Once you understand the basics, it's time to start listening and transcribing.
