In this beginner-focused lesson we explore the beauty and subtlety of sus voicings. We will discuss theory, song application, and useful practice drills and exercises.

It would be very helpful if you could write out the notation and a concurrent explanation of samples of each of the three drills you demonstrated at the end of the seminar. Thanks.

Hi Wendy,
Yes sure thing I will create this notation for you.
For the first drill, the most important thing to remember is that only the bass note changes between the ii-7 and the V13sus chord, so when we can find our ii-9 voicings in all 12 keys, all we do is change the bass note to root of the V chord and that will give us the voicing. Then we just have the usual 7 to 3 voice leading that we find in this lesson: https://www.pianogroove.com/jazz-piano-lessons/extended-251-progression-drill/
The second drill is a little more complicated in terms of the voice leading. I will create the notation for both today and upload to this page.
I would also like to add these drills to the Whole Step 251 Drills Course in a module on Sus movements.
Cheers,
Hayden

Thank you. As you may recall, in an early seminar I asked if there was a way to drill not using the circle of fifths. I really do prefer whole step drills. And I so appreciate your responsiveness. Every bit helps.

My pleasure Wendy and yes I also like to use whole step 251 drills. It’s a fun way to practice and I find that it helps me to visualise the same movements in different keys.
I have just added 2 PDF downloads to the Seminar Resources Section which contain full notation for both drills that I demonstrate. These are both in the whole step 251 drill format.
There may be some very slight differences to what I demonstrate during the seminar and so please reference the final 2 chapters to see the additional voices and melody that I am playing.
Enjoy practicing this stuff and see you in the next seminars.
Cheers,
Hayden
