How Insensitive Part 3
In part 3 of this tutorial we create a full Bossa Nova arrangement.
If you decide to play all the elements of Bossa Nova which is the bass line, syncopated chords, and finally the melody on top. You should be aware that this is very difficult. It requires a lot of hand independence and a strong awareness of the underling harmony.
The reason bossa nova rhythm has such a groove is because most of the time, when one hand plays the other hand rests. Naturally, your hands want to mimic each other, and this exactly why bossa nova is tricky to play.
You also have to pay attention to the harmony and chord changes and finally how to phrase and ornament the melody on top.
We are also going to look at a different variation of the Bossa Nova bass line in this lesson.
Practice Tips
- Spend time to internalize the left hand bass line.
- When playing the melody, don't feel compelled to always comp in the right hand as sometimes that can be very difficult to do.
- Practice in a slow tempo.
- Isolate the right-hand accompaniment for focused practice and improved coordination.
